Rabbit Breeds
It is estimated that there are over 100 breeds of rabbit. Actually,
though, you do not have such a choice because many breeds are available
only in their country of origin. Several factors must be considered
before a final choice is made. Otherwise, you may end up with a breed
unsuited to your needs.
Breed and Variety
A breed of rabbit is defined by its shape, feature or coat. A variety
usually refers to the color variations found within a breed. Same breeds
are really only varieties of other breeds.
They have developed to such a state that they have their own standards.
They are treated as distinct breeds for all practical purposes.
Standard
Each country sets a standard of excellence for the exhibited breeds.
This standard is based on the allocation of 100 points. The points are
divided between those features considered to be important to that breed.
It is wise to obtain a copy of the standard of your country for your
chosen breed or variety.
Fur or Fancy
Rabbit breeds are broadly divided into two group. A rabbit's placement
within the group depends on whether n was developed for its fur or as a
utility breed. The type and conformation of the rabbit is secondary to
the quality of the fur in the fur breeds. Fancy breeds include many
older breeds established to provide good pelts and meat. The
conformation and fur markings are very important in these fancy breeds.
Commercial meat producers had always used the large fancy breeds. Today,
meat rabbits are bred from all breeds and crosses of them.
